    Enterovirus and Bacterial Evaluation of Mississippi Oysters

    The numbers of enteric viruses and fecal coliform bacteria in oysters and water samples collected along the Mississippi Gulf coast during 1979 were determined. Ten viral isolates, representing members of the poliovirus group, were identified from an approved oyster harvesting site. The number of virus isolations increased to 51 when oysters were collected from a prohibited harvesting location. The majority of isolates were identified as poliovirus type 1 or 2, coxsackievirus B3 and B4, and echovirus type 24. Fecal coliforms in water samples collected at approved and prohibited locations confirmed the classification assigned to each area by the Mississippi State Board of Health. The numbers of fecal coliforms in oyster samples collected at the identical sites did not reflect the levels observed in water samples. There was no positive correlation between indicator bacteria in the water column and the number of viruses in the shellfish examined. These results imply that viral analyses of shellfish may be needed as an adjunct to bacteriological analyses so that shellfish safety is verified

    Experimental characterisation of the mechanical properties and microstructure of Acrocomia mexicana fruit from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico

    A study of the mechanical properties and microstructure at different drying conditions of the Cocoyol fruit endocarp of Acrocomia Mexicana palm found in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico was performed. Quasi-static uniaxial compression was carried out on endocarp samples. The experimental results showed that the fruit exhibited an average peak force and displacement at failure of 4.23 kN and 2.43 mm, respectively. The average energy absorbed by the fruits before failure was 6.06 J. Optical and scanning electron microscopy of cross-sections of the equatorial region revealed that the endocarp has complex hierarchical structure. The micrographs showed that the structure is made of bundles of randomly oriented tubes and bubble-like cells, showing entangled network of hollow micro channels, which are in the order of tens of microns.     Climate change and the Great Barrier Reef: a vulnerability assessment

    The Great Barrier Reef is renowned internationally for its ecological importance and the beauty of its seascapes and landscapes. These natural values also provide important ecosystem services, which underpin Australian $6.9 billion worth of economic activity and incalculable social values. In combination, the social-ecological system centred on the reef is extraordinary in its importance, and in its complexity. Understanding the vulnerability of such a large and intricate system to climate change is a particularly difficult challenge. A first step in meeting this challenge is to describe the general characteristics of the system and the environment in which they interact. Toward this end, this chapter introduces the Great Barrier Reef and the human systems that interact with it, providing a context for the detailed chapters that follow.This is Chapter 1 of Climate change and the Great Barrier Reef: a vulnerability assessment.
